It has been documented long ago that the continuing growth of the greenhouse gasses will result in major climatic changes. There is an understanding, too, that global climate problems must be solved globally.
Technological solutions and proposals for changes exist to develop ecologically sustainable and democratic forms of society.
But the necessary changes and a binding climate agreement showing a joint solidarity does not come about automatically.
Popular pressure is necessary. It is of the utmost importance that national and international social, climate- and environmental movements make demands and are active from now on and up until the climate summit in December.
The climate demands must be raised everywhere: In work places, places of education, trade unions, housing societies, international solidarity organizations, environmental movements, local authorities, Parliament etc.
Our main demands to the climate summit are:
- 2020 targets: 40% CO2 reduction in rich countries.
- Financial support for poor countries.
- No fake solutions like emissions trading.
Peaceful, massive forms of activities and no police violence during the summit
The Red-Green Alliance has given priority to two main activities during the summit, December 7 - 18 in Copenhagen: Participation in the civil society climate forum and the demonstration on December 12.
The Climate Forum is the alternative climate summit, which will take place in the DGI town close to the central station of Copenhagen.
Behind the Climate Forum is a wide range of Danish and international environmental and civil society organizations. There will be workshops, arrangements, debates and exhibitions etc. One of the main outcomes of the forum will be a global climate declaration.
The demonstration on December 12 in Copenhagen is being planned as a broad and big popular demonstration. It is of the utmost importance that the demonstration is broad, multitudinous, peaceful and focusing on political main themes such as: action now, substantial CO2 reductions in the rich countries up until 2020 and global climate justice. The Red-Green Alliance is taking part in the preparations.
Together with SUF (Socialist Youth Front) the Red-Green Alliance is planning a bloc in the demonstration with 1-2 trucks, music, speakers, banners, balloons, flyers etc. Local mobilization is being planned with busses to Copenhagen from other parts of Denmark.
The Red-Green Alliance calls for joining the demonstration in a peaceful, colourful way, which may include political, satirical and artistic inputs on the way. The Red-Green Alliance encourages people not to be provoked by anybody to behave violently. Likewise we encourage the police to not provoke or be provoked. Good preparation and dialogue may mean that the police may refrain from using force or weapons.
Strengthen the climate struggle – Continue to pressure government leaders and business owners
The preparations for the climate summit in Copenhagen in the form of international summits for government leaders, lobbyists etc., is not to be seen in a very optimistic light. Therefore it is our task to contribute to making visible the necessary climate targets and climate initiatives. We should as well contribute to strengthening the popular movements for them to be able continue in the years to come. We will make use of the activities up to and during the summit to discuss, exchange experiences, make contacts and take part in various forms of actions together with other Danish and international organizations.
The Red-Green Alliance has worked out a climate plan for red and green transformation, which may be used as an example in other countries. The plan demands a radical change of society taking into account climate and environmental as well as social justice considerations. Denmark would be able to reverse the present development and stop the growth in greenhouse gas emissions and reach the target of less than one ton per inhabitant before the year 2040 in a sustainable way based on solidarity.
